Made at a factory in Japan with careful attention to weight for racing. A large duct on top of the engine draws out the heat that builds up in the engine bay while drifting, dramatically improving cooling. Besides lowering oil and coolant temperatures, keeping engine-bay temperatures down also helps prevent sensor failures caused by heat. The carbon hood has a clear coat even unpainted for a beautiful finish, showing off the strong, continuous fiber structure of carbon. Dry carbon is light, durable and heat-resistant but very vulnerable to UV, so D-MAX hoods are wet carbon, made with polyester resin and air-cured — better suited to street users. The FRP version has a gelcoat finish ready for paint.
